Halloween on Harrison: A North End Tradition

by Lysi Bishop Real Estate

Every October, one of Boise's most beautiful historic streets transforms into a Halloween destination. We may be a little biased, but we think this hometown holiday tradition deserves recognition among the very best Halloween streets in the country.

A Little History Behind Harrison Boulevard

Long before Harrison Boulevard became famous for Halloween, it was one of Boise's most prestigious residential addresses.

Originally known as 17th Street, the boulevard was renamed in honor of President Benjamin Harrison, who signed the act granting Idaho statehood in 1890. His visit to Boise in 1891 prompted the city to rename the street after the 23rd president.

As Boise expanded in the early 1900s, prominent residents built homes along the boulevard, creating an impressive collection of architectural styles, from Queen Anne and Tudor Revival to Colonial Revival and Craftsman. The landscaped median and streetlights were added in 1916, helping establish the picturesque streetscape we recognize today.

The Harrison Boulevard Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, followed by local historic district designation in 1989. Today, the boulevard remains one of the most recognizable and architecturally significant streets in Boise's North End.

Halloween on Harrison: A Boise Tradition

The tradition stretches back decades, growing from neighborhood trick-or-treating into one of the area's most beloved annual experiences.

Over the years, homeowners have embraced the holiday with increasingly elaborate displays, turning their historic homes and front lawns into haunted houses & movie-inspired scenes.

By 2014, Boise State Public Radio was reporting on the boulevard's enormous Halloween crowds. One homeowner described handing out 2,500 to 3,000 pieces of candy in a single evening. In a 2024 news report, another longtime resident recalled running out of candy during her first Halloween on Harrison more than 30 years earlier!

And yes, the coveted full-size candy bars are part of the legend!

Ranging from witty to whimsical and spooky to spectacular, the creativity and personality on display are truly remarkable. Every year brings something new, and many homeowners have developed their own signature decorations that visitors look forward to seeing.

One longtime participating home features an original, two-story-tall piece of Halloween artwork painted each year by the homeowners' adult daughter. The enormous painting hangs from the upper balcony, becoming a new attraction each season.

Elsewhere, you'll find clever references to classic horror movies, Boise State football players, and plenty of surprises. This year, there's even a grand opening for an old-school "Blockbuster Video." If you grew up in the '80s, this one is especially fun!

There's also a pumpkin patch filled with homegrown pumpkins, perfectly staged for family photos. It belongs to Harrison's distinctive log cabin home, whose current owners personally stripped and refinished its once-painted log exterior. It's one of those wonderful little stories behind the homes that adds another layer of appreciation for this historic neighborhood.

Our Favorite Way to Experience Halloween on Harrison

As North End specialists, many of us live, work, and spend much of our time in the neighborhood. We love the energy of Halloween night, but one of our favorite traditions is visiting a few days before the big event.

A weeknight stroll along Harrison, preferably around sunset, is the perfect opportunity to appreciate all the details without the Halloween crowds. We recommend stopping in Hyde Park for a hot chocolate or favorite warm drink to carry along the way.

There's always something new & fun, even for those of us who have been walking these streets for years.

Little-known fact: when we sell a home on Harrison, the purchase contract includes a clause requiring buyers to go all out for Halloween. Haha! Of course, we're kidding, but there may be a little unwritten understanding that comes with joining this special street!

Maybe what we love most about Halloween on Harrison is the spirit behind it all.

There's something about the experience that restores your love for humanity. Homeowners pour countless hours, creativity, and energy into these elaborate displays, not for recognition or reward, but just to bring joy to others. How great is that?

It's a wonderful example of what makes Boise's North End such a special place to live. The historic architecture may be what first catches your eye, but it's the neighbors, traditions, and sense of community that give the neighborhood its character.

We hope to see you out and about. Happy Halloween from all of us at the Lysi Bishop Real Estate team!
